ACEO Watercolor & Ink Original Impressionistic Landscape Forest at Dusk Purple Green

It's been awhile since I've posted but I'm glad to be able to share my latest ACEO Landscape.

Small format painting allows me to express energy and mood; I enjoy watercolor moving around the paper in combination with the dots and dashes of ink. I enjoyed painting the impressionistic purple and green forest.

Does Mood Influence Your Art?

People have asked me do you have to be “inspired” to paint and I usually say no but mood does influence the subject matter in front of me.   Painting or constructing art is a process of searching and researching in my mind and environment until I’m ready to say it with paint…

This ACEO was a happy thought regarding a day at the Carnival but it’s been raining and cloudy the miniature painting is a little more moody and impressionistic...  So did the rain and my mood affect the painting?  Yes, I think so...

Original Watercolor Ink Aceo Landscape and Experiments

ACEO Chinese Ink Paintings

The first image is my fantasy impressionistic tree in a summer cloud burst on 140lb. watercolor paper with watercolor and ink.   This miniature work is a combination imagination and enjoyment of color.   Well it’s not a total fantasy, I often see a tree this shape near a park I travel.  Smaller paintings can stand alone or are the basis for larger work.
The second image is ACEO’s I had painted in the past on thin rice paper with sumi ink and bamboo brushes. I appreciate calligraphy and sumi paintings so I gave it a try.   The works on rice paper were mounted to a backing paper with glue in order to smooth out the edges and bring out the color of the work.

What I enjoy about the smaller format efforts is the ability to experiment with different tools, processes, mediums and genres.    Sometimes my experiments don’t work but at the very least I’ve learned about a new product, art form, and had a little (2 ½” X 3 ½”) art adventure.
If you want to experiment or collect art, ACEO miniature artworks are a wonderful way to start.

Two Eyes, Two Ears, and a Mouth (Portraits)

This Fine Art Friday collection celebrates contemporary portraits.  What I enjoy is the diversity of genre, size, and medium.  Each one of these artists had an idea regarding a portrait/face and made it their own creative statement.

Updates and News:
I found an art team on Etsy that celebrates small format art.  An SFA is no larger than 14" square but carries a visual punch.  You can see some examples in the above collection

A couple of new followers, thanks so much for the support, here are their links to see their latest work:

Mexican Folk Art: "Day of The Dead" Gallery

“The Day of The Dead” is a celebration and memorial of friends and loved ones that have passed away. What a great idea and tribute to family and friends... This tradition has roots in the Mexican culture.

I think the artists have captured the spirit of the theme with thoughtfulness and some humor. Although the images are dramatic, I appreciate the sentiment of remembering love ones...

Ink Original Painting and ACEO Black and White

It poured down rain today. I'm not complaining Southern California weather is pretty moderate compared to other states. I stayed indoors and adjusted some ink paintings and researched my next work. Today all my ink work is with Chinese ink. It has a rich organic quality that fits my style.

The ink is almost applied like watercolor with a brush instead of a pen. The surface of the tree painting is double shuen paper and the rose painting is on watercolor paper. Each paper has different absorption rates. The tree/landscape is a good example of how delicate paper causes the ink to spread in an organic way. It's a matter of patience and trial and error.

This is a little tip for beginning ink painters. The amount of water you have in your brush is important. Less water offers those strong black strokes. More water provides a variety of greys.

I use "shop" towels mechanic's have to clean up their work. The towels are very absorbent. Stroke your brush on the surface before putting it into the ink. It assist's the painter in the battle to have the correct amount of water to ink. Till next time stay dry and comfortable.
