The painting is a combination of Chinese ink washes and a moderate application of calligraphy. The challenge was to very the strokes and washes. I feel comfortable with the organic qualities of the ink and its richness. An expert could probably discuss the chemistry of the ink but I just know it feels rich. I enjoy the storytelling with ink and paper.... When I paint with ink, it feels as though we have a connection with our past. The red seal is always the period on the creative sentence...

Original Painting Black Rose

The challenge was to create transparency with ink. Hmm, I think it worked . . . I tried to replicate a sense of intimacy within the frame. I always find it amazing what you can do with soot and water.
Ancient Chinese calligraphers and present day artists’s often place a seal (pictographs/inscriptions)with their name or phrase on a painting. This often ehances the design of the art work. The meaning of the seal in this ink and watercolor painting represents harmony.Latest auction

Calm Day-Painting Watercolor Ink on "Rice Paper"
It's interesting painting on double shuen paper "rice paper." Although at first glance the paper appears delicate, it accepts watercolor and ink in a very subtle way. The strokes and dots can be seen very clearly.Latest auctions

Painting Watercolor, Ink and Acrylic

This small format artwork (4.5" X 6.5") is a combination watercolor, ink, and acrylic painting. The challenge for me today was to stay loose while painting. The 140 lb. watercolor block gave me that opportunity. The artwork did not have a chance to buckle under the pressure of the ink and acrylic. Enjoy! (My husband is watching the NBA finals this week. I should have called this artwork Hydrangea’s Hoop or Kobe’s Blossom! No, I’m just joking . . .)Wednesday, June 3, 2009

ACEO
These small format paintings (paintings under 14 inches square) and ACEO's (paintings/artwork 2.5 X 3.5 inches) are examples of what you can do with rich black ink. The brush strokes hopefully have personality. Strokes are thick, thin, short, long, tight, and loose. Brush strokes like people come in all shapes and sizes. Latest auction

ACEO, Miniature Painting Watercolor Ink

Watercolor, Chinese Ink, and archival ink pen. The watercolor ACEO (Art card) miniature painting is an ode to perseverance. Currently my neighborhood has been suffering under "May Grey" and now "June Gloom." This ink and watercolor are an example of a petite flower holding its head up and waiting for the sun.
I’m influenced by eastern calligraphers and western watercolor painters. I love the design and geometry of Chinese and Japanese ancient artists and the beautiful watercolor works of Winslow Homer and Charles Demuth. Latest auction.
