I think the concept of starting fresh and renewal is a great idea. The ship and its occupants looking for a safe harbor and even a painting will benefit from a new day and fresh eyes... I know for me its difficult to leave a painting alone and just let it simmer. It's not that I'm in a hurry but I guess my enthusiasm takes over.

Sometimes when I'm painting I feel like I'm writing a chapter in a novel and need to see how the chapter ends. Hopefully my art journey is a long novel with twists and turns and I have the opportunity to start fresh each day....

"How Far Is Heaven Road"

This is my latest landscape. I’m influenced by nature and its different faces, friends, music, and images I see and find… This week the Southern California coast has been experiencing lots of coastal fog. My painting was a direct result of me wishing for a sunny day….No sun so I turned to reference material. It’s amazing the images that are all stored in our head, studio or available copy right free via the internet.

My friend sent me some photos of her adventures in Utah thus the orange and raw sienna color in the road. I was playing an old CD my son gave me and thinking of old friends and family thus the title “How Far is Heaven Road.” I also went to Wet Canvas and Morgue File web sites. These two sites are great source for reference material. I put all those influences and created this landscape.

The most difficult part of this painting was funneling down all this information prior to that first stroke. I don’t think I’m alone. Well have a terrific day and thank you for letting me share...

Painting and Music a Great Combination

The majority of this work especially the body of the tree was painted with a palette knife. This painting has a strong textural quality due to the thick paint and knife strokes

I was listening to blues and jazz music and this landscape is what surfaced. The music didn't make me feel melancholy but you knew the singer was digging deep from a soulful place... I guess you can say trees, music, and art carry me to a special place. Today was just good day to paint.

Most of my personal small format paintings lean toward the impressionistic to realistic/traditional but I see the joy and appreciate many different genres of creativity.

This treasury is an example of different mediums and styles that appear to flow together. Textiles, glass, geometric jewelry, prints, expressive abstracts, watercolor, drawing, silk paintings, and vintage prints share the same space beautifully. I think these artists and artisans communicate a wonderful vitality that can't be denied.

"Branching Out"

My usual painting size is 8” X 10” or smaller. These small format paintings have an intimacy that I enjoy and I’ll continue to express myself in that format but I needed a change this week…

While researching this seascape, sketching, taking photos I felt the painting needed an expressive change. This painting is 12” X 16” it doesn’t seem like such a large leap but it was a way of moving forward. The ocean is so huge, you’ll see surfers, swimmers; people enjoying themselves at the pier but sometimes that big water tugs at you and I just want to paint something huge.

So I looked around the studio and the biggest canvas I had was 12” X 16” not very “huge” but it fit the artistic urge. I don’t know where this is going but I’m certain for myself painting is like writing a visual story and sometimes the story needs a few more chapters… and inches of canvas.

"Your Art Work Doesn't Have to Match"

Prior to curating this treasury I remembered an art history teacher saying “art does not have to match.” The focus should be on the beauty and honesty of the art work and how it makes you feel.

The collection is made up of realistic art, abstract paintings, non-representational art, collage, beautiful jewelry, accessories and a delicately beautiful cowl. The thread that holds them together is they can all stand alone as interesting and beautiful work.

I suppose that's something I have to remember and strive for in my own work. Thanks for letting me share now I'm off to paint...

I'm a member of a variety art teams on Etsy and I often post Etsy Art Treasuries and assume everyone knows what I'm discussing. A friend of mine asked me, what is a treasury? The following is a little information regarding treasuries and my motivation.

An Etsy Treasury is a "member-curated shopping gallery comprised of lists of items. Lists contain 16 items. Members can feature their favorite items, items selected on a theme or whatever they like...."

My treasuries are usually a mix of my favorite art works of fellow team members and new artists. (Click the links on the above treasury and you'll see details regarding each artwork)

I approach a treasury as a creative process. I focus on a theme, find images that are creative, and then mix different genres of art to create a cohesive theme.... Hopefully this mix gels and will highlight the artist and promote the arts.

"Nancy's Walk"

I’m grateful for my friends. I’m not sure about other artists but for me painting is a solitary endeavor. I’m mainly alone when I paint and research my artwork. It’s so nice when my friends take me out of my cocoon. My little habitat is fun and filled with paints and brushes but nevertheless its still a little “arty” envelope . . .

So my friend and I took a walk out to San Onofre State Beach. The walk is filled with native plants and at the end of the trail and cliffs below you see the ocean. Well I didn’t have any paints and forgot my camera at home but thought the scene was the beginning of a painting.

My same friend went out again on a nature walk. She remembered how much I liked the cliffs and ocean and sent me some reference photos. So this painting is a combination of memory, imagination and a friend’s thoughtfulness. “It can’t get better then that.”

"Brent Gave Her Roses"

I hope everyone had a good weekend. Initially, the painting began with a lighter middle valued background but it just didn't seem to do the roses justice.

The roses were a fun and fabulous gift and they had lots of oomph. So I tried making the background luminous with darker values and color. It seemed to bring out the roses and give them more spirit and punched up the golden tones in the roses.

I'd been reading a book about the artist Robert Motherwell
an American abstract painter. His images have big blocks of color, texture and they are huge. I think his strong color sense kind of slipped into this painting.

I found these roses while walking toward the San Clemente Pier. I thought I'd be researching possible future seascape paintings and instead I found theses wild roses. They looked like they were fighting to survive and come out of the dark. The vibrant colors against the dark have an intimate quality.

One of my favorite artists and I have many is Pierre Bonnard. He created these intimate/psychological visual stories with vibrant colors . . . I like the idea of not only making a statement with your subject matter but also with the color, value, composition and brush strokes.

Painting Motivation, Inspiration and Hope

I thought I'd give a little insight into my past, motivation, and why my art inspiration comes from nature. I'm a retired victim/witness advocate. I worked with survivors of crime & other trauma for about 20 years. During that period I saw how the process of creating art could assist survivors in their healing journey.

Not all survivors became artists but many had a cathartic experience through art in its different forms. I truly believe people don't forget a traumatic and painful occurrence. They acquire tools that help them survive and become stronger.

After witnessing arts benefits, I began reading art history books, created my first stick figures, and was on the road to my own art education and journey.

My subject matter on the surface is not about crime and pain. I do understand artists that share their emotions on canvas and it can be beautiful. My work is more about capturing nature. The motivation is to capture life's natural tenderness. I like knowing "mother earth" gives us hope.

The combination of sumi ink on watercolor paper is an exciting medium. The "happy accidents" and many shades of black and grey that are possible is wonderful. The ink picks up every nuance of an artist's brush strokes.

Most of the time it's good but when I drink to many cups of coffee, you can see it. I guess, that's one of the unique qualities of original art.

It's been a busy week and working on these ink paintings was cathartic. It brings me back to the basics of making marks on paper.

I'm a big fan of traditional Chinese and Japanese brush painting on "rice" paper, created with a ground ink stick. My preference is liquid sumi ink and working on 140 lb watercolor paper.

These paintings are a combination of memory and enjoying a day at the park between rainy days in California.

Latin Jazz Music, Past Loves, and Art

Around Valentine’s Day, I think of past and present loved ones. I started thinking of my dad and how he loved Latin Jazz and salsa music. So I spent yesterday listening to some of his favorites. I went on You Tube and played some great music by famous Cuban singer Celia Cruz. (My father's taste ran from "big band music" to jazz.)

The music was energetic and sultry. I spent the day dancing, painting and drawing with ink. Great combination ink and jazz. This was one of the paintings, I think of it as a dancing still life. The entire process was fun and a little bit of a celebration.

Looking for Whales off Dana Point:
Beginning/Blocking in color and shapes:
It's been a nice couple of weeks in Southern California. At this time of year I feel fortunate not to be shoveling snow.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to go whale watching off the coast of Dana Point, California. It was fun and we spotted a couple of whales, migrating south toward Mexico. Most of my reference photos were mainly the wake they left in the water. They'd left their fluke (tail) and down they'd go into the sea.

So I took lot's of reference photos of the sea and painted this seascape. I had a slow start, blocked in some color and then came back with more color & details...

This painting is on my easel, it's on the verge of completion. I wanted a somewhat neutral palette but I thought it needed a little extra texture and color. So the strongest bands of color were done with a pallet knife.

Anyway, I heard about a Small Format Show at the San Clemente Art Gallery and it was fun. All the paintings are under 8" X 10" and are less than $300.00. The volunteers were warm and friendly and San Clemente is a great place to visit.

The winds blow from the inland valley to the ocean. These “Santa Ana” winds can transform a sky. The colors at sunset looked lush and delicate at the same time. (The area is actually around San Clemente, California.)

Painting this work was a matter of problem solving. If I realy think about it, most of my work is a matter of pushing and pulling until the story is completed.

I wanted the colors in the sky to tell the story but I needed to anchor the painting. It seems to me placing the tree at the lower right-hand corner, plus the darker values in the landscape did the job. I painted the edges as you can see in the image below. See additional detail in my Etsy Shop.

I was thumbing through Kevin Macpherson's book, Landscape Painting Inside & Out and Chapter Seven asks "Why do you paint?" The answer for me is I have an artistic story to express. My visual adventures are rooted usually in my perception of nature.

I painted "Red Balloon," (8'x10")above in the studio after spending time at the park. The trees were reminiscent of old California but the person with the balloon brought it into 2011. I liked the idea of old and new together . . .

I painted "Sunset at Poche Beach" (4" x 6") in order to capture an abstract moment in a very small canvas. My hope is although these paintings are very different they both provide the viewer an entrance into a story they can complete.

Art, Recovery and Healing

I appreciate different styles, mediums, and subject matter in art. At times I’m drawn to the execution of the work and other times the emotion. Earlier today I posted the following regarding trauma survivors and art:

“I do want to applaud the survivors of crime and victimization. It always amazes me, what the human spirit can withstand and continue with a productive life way beyond a trauma. Perhaps that is the reason I enjoy arts and crafts it has that personal bright light. It has the spirit that makes the world spin.”

My general feeling regarding art is it has an ability to be a cathartic vehicle for healing. I appreciate survivors of catastrophic illness, drug addiction and abuse that channel their experiences. The emotions in the work are sometimes raw but authentic and they come out on the other side with the help of their artistic exploration. I’m not a doctor but if creating art helps a person heal, it's a good thing.

Southern California has been experiencing heavy rains. The past week I was reminded nature is in full control at the San Clemente Beaches.

This day I felt I had a glimpse of an expressive and assertive ocean. The sun came out for a brief time but underneath the sea is full throttle activity . . .
You can see the churning in the ocean. I could see waves sand and dirt rolling around.

Landscapes and seascapes for me are a matter of taking cues from nature and editing down the scene. I usually paint in a small format but this scene needed a larger canvas (16" X 20"). See more photos and details.

Original Painting California Landscape by JC Strong

It’s been a turbulent 24 hours. Southern California has had lots’ of rain. My neighborhood lost power for 18 hours. (I kept the frig closed so my Christmas goodies would not spoil. I know what's important.)

Water came down so hard, our road seemed like a river. Everybody is safe in our neighborhood. It just reminded me nature is in control.

I started this painting of the T-Street area, bridge, and majestic tree before the lights went out and I finished it this afternoon. It's a beautiful sunny spot in San Clemente, California. I'll paint a rainy day some other time.

I give the old masters a lot of credit for the ability to create without electricity and heat etc. I couldn't paint in candle light. I'm glad for the little advantage's this Christmas, like electricity and heat.

This painting is my creative memory of Xel-Ha near Cancun, Mexico. A few years ago I went to this area and Xel-Ha is a "natural aquarium." It's a beautiful place where a river meets the ocean. It's one of the first places I learned how to snorkel. It was a fun time and place.... I'm no pro. I just had a big mask fins and splashed around and enjoyed the wonderful scenery.

Traveling the Highways and Impressionist Landscape by JC Strong

I spent some fun time traveling from California to Nevada and Arizona. It was a nice time visiting family and connecting with friends. I spent a lot of time taking reference photos of desert landscapes while traveling Old Route 66 and Highway 93. While traveling on Highway 93 to Wickenburg, Arizona the desert landscape is gorgeous. You can almost see Native Americans and frontiers’ men riding their horses at the turn of the century. The desert is beautiful this time of year.

This small format painting is a composite of scenery I enjoyed during this time. My landscapes are usually based on a combination of a real time and place plus imagination.

I’ve just finished a small format painting. It’s raining again so I sit at my keyboard and I wonder.

If artists from the past had the opportunity to author, a blog would they discuss the joy, struggles, inspiration or the everyday details of creating art? I thought of so many artists from the Renaissance to cartoon animators I’d love to know about in their own words. I know art history books outline their lives but new technology would be interesting in the artist's hands. . .

Do you think Matisse would discuss his motivation for his figure ink studies, oil paintings and then in his later years paper gouache cutouts? Andy Warhol, I hope would tell us in his own words why Campbell’s Soup. I would love to know when and why Jackson Pollack dropped, dribbled, poured his first “action painting.” I’d like to ask creators/designers of Bugs Bunny, Tex Avery and Bob Clampett how did you select that little guys look, attitude, and voice (Mel Blanc) and the famous line “What’s Up Doc.” That would be fun . . .

Finally, artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo could share their personal struggles and the artists and collectors around the world/blogosphere would reach out and share their story.

Hello folks I’ve noticed the wide gap between the text and photos of my last post on October 18th. I made the photos with a treasury generator. Since I often discuss other artists and their work I thought you’d like a glimpse of their paintings and jewelry first hand. (The photos of the"Day of the Dead" artwork below are great.)

Although, my first attempt had a few kinks. The kinks are all on my part. I think the tool is worth exploring. My next attempt with the generator and html language will go a little smoother.

Finishing an Impressionist Painting

The painting process for this work continued today.

The shadows in the street became a little more subtle, and I strengthened the color of the orange walls. Now, I think I'll stop and consider this work finished.

This new painting is my effort to capture a street in Mexico and embrace the pallette of colors used by Rembrandt.

Rembrandt used a five-color pallette of yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, black, cadmium red and white. All I can say, bless the old masters . . . They are able to create vibrant masterpieces in chiaroscuro with just a few colors and even ground charcoal into white in order to make a blue grey. Old masters make fine art look effortless . . .
It was a great exercise but to tell the whole truth I added a couple of additional colors and lots of light. It turned out to be an impressionist landscape. I just couldn’t stay out of my “Art Bin.”

The key thing was to remind me a limited pallette is a valuable exercise. It gave me a connection to the past and of course I'll keep trying . . . After studying this painting, I'm going to try to take it a little further. I'll post the outcome in the near future.

Ink Original Painting and ACEO Black and White

It poured down rain today. I'm not complaining Southern California weather is pretty moderate compared to other states. I stayed indoors and adjusted some ink paintings and researched my next work. Today all my ink work is with Chinese ink. It has a rich organic quality that fits my style.

The ink is almost applied like watercolor with a brush instead of a pen. The surface of the tree painting is double shuen paper and the rose painting is on watercolor paper. Each paper has different absorption rates. The tree/landscape is a good example of how delicate paper causes the ink to spread in an organic way. It's a matter of patience and trial and error.

This is a little tip for beginning ink painters. The amount of water you have in your brush is important. Less water offers those strong black strokes. More water provides a variety of greys.

I use "shop" towels mechanic's have to clean up their work. The towels are very absorbent. Stroke your brush on the surface before putting it into the ink. It assist's the painter in the battle to have the correct amount of water to ink. Till next time stay dry and comfortable.

My all-time favorite subjects are the landscape and seascapes of San Clemente, California. San Clemente is a wonderful beach town rich in community friendliness and California history. The town is a mix of families, senior citizens, young, old, men and women that love the ocean.

Walk around town at different times of the day and you'll see the ocean, sky, and landscape in different vibrant colors. Today's painting is inspired by twilight walks near the beach, after a warm day in the sun.

Most of my flower painting inspirations come from my walks around the neighborhood. I take my camera and just photograph my favorites . . . The idea for the painting will stay with me and then be written/sketched in my journal. Many times a flower will remind me of a person or a current theme. Some flowers are exuberant others are sad but they are usually always expressive . . .

I was asked about the tools and materials I use in my work. I’ll discuss my tool’s today. My favorite tools are an“Orchid Bamboo” medium and small brush. They are a great utility brush for my ink work. The point makes great calligraphy strokes and holds the ink like a mini well. Usually for the body of the flowers I’ll use soft round water color brushes. Good brushes will hold their point over a long time if they are pampered and help with the painting process.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox said "A weed is but an unloved flower." Well I hope all our flowers are loved, have a great weekend.

The colors of fall have been on my mind. This small format landscape is filled with orange and autumn neutrals. The punch of color is in the red door and violet floral’s.

This house is in Los Rios Historic District in San Juan Capistrano, California. This street has a wealth of very inviting cottages and historic homes.

This particular property caught my eye and I made up a little story of what I saw. The house is modest, proud and aging. It’s giving back to the neighborhood with its beautiful gardens filled with herbs and flowers. I always feel like little gardens give a community hope.

Let me introduce you to a member-flower of my friend Tom’s Garden. It’s become my latest Asian Inspired painting with my California twist. Tom has a slice of a garden that has a multitude of plants and flowers. When I walk the neighborhood, I take my camera and just photograph my favorites.
These images become the resource and inspiration for some of my later paintings...

The Chrysanthemum is a “fall-flowering plant.” I’m told in the Chinese culture it represents “strength and triumph over misfortune.” I like that idea... It's wonderful when something delicate becomes a source of strength.

Some days, riding along Pacific Coast Highway from Laguna Beach to San Clemente, California, you see beautiful coastlines. I always wonder, what did the coastline look like fifty years ago? (One of my favorite places in Laguna Beach is the Laguna Art Museum... (The museum has a breathtaking exhibit of early 20th Century artists. These early artists documented the coast line of long ago.)

So, today the sky is blue and the waves are aqua green and smooth. I’ve enjoyed a walk to the San Clemente Pier. It was easy to imagine a “Retro Summer."

Finding Art Inspiration

Do you ever have a lack of inspiration or inability to create. I call it a slump or a basic lack of "mojo?"

A few years ago while in Palm Springs I went to the B. Lewin Gallery. This Gallery had a collection of Mexican Modern Art. (I think it’s closed now.) The masters I remember were Rufino Tamayo and Alfaro Siqueiros. I remember walking in and feeling like I was in a Mayan cathedral something inside just hummed with excitement. The exact same thing happened when I went to the Chicago Art Institute and saw the legends of French Impressionism. I remember seeing these work's of art in person, and thinking it was a visual gift. I just wanted to jump around and say thank you. I would have looked a little silly.

Although I don't paint like these artists, these totally different venues of inspiration both accomplished the same thing, a love of art. So on the occasion my artistic "mojo" is not flowing, I go to the nearest art museum or remember those wonderful venues from the past that first inspired me.

It was a great weekend filled with friends, family, and fun. The sun is out and the water in the ocean has an aqua/blue cast. I even had the opportunity to sell one of my paintings. That was nice . . .

After walking around the neighborhood I finished off this little watercolor. Summer is ending not as many butterflies flying around the house. So I put one in this painting.

My Asian influenced paintings I like to call “Asian Inspired with a California Twist.” Many artists have been influenced by the calligraphy, pictographs, and composition of Chinese brush painting.

When I combine watercolor and ink, it has a little bit of an eastern flavor but without a doubt my western roots are lodged in the subject matter. It’s said simple calligraphy can tell much about the artist. You can see more details in my Etsy Shop.

This ACEO (2 1/2" X 3 1/2")is another respectful nod to the Asian brush art forms with a California twist.... I love the organic qualities of ink and paper. The little gold like flecks give this mini painting texture and warmth.

The surface of this painting is "rice paper" inorder to protect the paper and bring out the ink it's mounted with a cellulose adhesive. (It's like wallpaper paste.) The tricky part is not destroying the paper. See available art in my Etsy Shop.

This is an original watercolor and ink painting posted in my shop yesterday. It's actually cliffs near my home. I used mainly ink. It has an Asian inspired influence.

I think it has something to do with the calligraphic strokes and the way the ink loads in the brushes. My acrylic paintings take a totally different look. I like the diversity in styles and medium.

I attended the Sawdust Art Festival and Art A Fair. Both venues have some wonderful artist's and their work.

At the Art A Fair, I saw some fantastic examples of Chinese brush painting in a small format by "Debbie's Art Studio." Her work was peaceful, organic and expressive. All done in a small format.

Art Inspiration, Dog Art and Halloween

I went to my local art supply store and all the Halloween items were out. I had no icons of the holiday, so I did a watercolor memory of “Maddie” and turned it into a greeting card.

One year all the dogs in the neighborhood dressed up for Halloween. My neighbor's dog Maddie has such a sad face, she always looks like she has a tear in her eye but she’s a love able happy dog.

So now my Halloween tradition is I keep a supply of doggy treats for the four legged trick or treaters . . it’s all in fun and a joy to see . Inspiration and humor comes from everywhere! Hmm, I wonder what art historians would think of my "Halloween Dog Art." Just kidding... You can see this card in my Etsy Shop.

I was in San Juan Capistrano looking just enjoying a meal with friends and found this tree with personality. Some trees send out good vibes. It was almost saying “look at me, look at me . . . ” I stood back, it reminded me of one of Charles Burchfield’s trees . . . Mr. Burchfield’s work is amazing it has a “haunting” quality . . .

Is my tree haunted? I don’t think so but it had the ability to stand out. I love trees with "pizazz" and the tree had "it" in the little parking lot behind the Italian Restaurant.

Do icons of art and art history stay in our memory to become artworks at a later date? Do certain trees, flowers, and people have attributes that compel us to put them on paper or canvas? I think they do but I’ll keep thinking about these questions as I continue with my work...

During this time, I was listening to some Blues’ music. Music and Art are a great combination. Wow, a fantasy blue mum and listening to Etta James, what could be better?

While working on this painting, I felt close to the artist Milton Avery.
Mr. Avery’s abstract landscapes were intuitive with bold colors that had a "representational" feel. According to Widipedia “Milton Avery was often thought of as the American Matisse.”

Beside the art history influences this abstract/impressionist landscape's heart is color. The sky and figure are relaxing in a warm sun. I painted blocks of orange and blue with the mixed neutrals in the sky...You can see more details regarding the artwork in my Etsy Shop . . .

The news has had a lot of coverage regarding recovery and sobriety. I found this interesting blog “Alcoholic Outsider Artist.” It’s one man’s way of dealing with the issue. It’s great to see how other artist’s express themselves. It feels as though the artist with a stroke of the brush is capturing his experience.

Although I’m not an outsider artist, my goal is to be present and capture the subjects and moments that are important to me. My guess is I'm not alone in this area.

I love the library. I know the web is an extraordinary resource but I like the feel and touch of books, especially art books. I came across “Alla Prima” by Richard Schmid. Mr. Schmid is an oil painter but his down to earth ideas and insights could apply to different types of mediums.

His paintings are grounded in a strong foundation and have a lively spirit. Hmm, I’m not an art critic but I sure enjoyed his book and images...

Light and Dark Influences in Art

The Sun is out. I’m glad. The “June Gloom” is ended.

Beside the Sun, another favorite influence of mine regarding dark and light is the Italian artist Caravaggio. It seems whether you have studied in an academic setting or is self-taught we’re all influenced by nature and art masters that have come before us . .

I guess it’s a continuation of yesterday’s comments. I love art history. Art masters and their lessons live on in their paintings. Note: This is an Liquitex acrylic painting on a canvas panel.

The Sea and Abstract Art Influences

I had been thinking of this seascape for a while. The underlying influence’s is the sea and abstract art. I appreciate art history and made a connection with the “fields” of color within the ocean and abstract interpretation of color.

I can remember years ago seeing Mark Rothko’s huge abstract paintings. When I saw them, I felt like I was in a church. I don’t know what it was but I had one of those “Aha” moments.

Walking in Corona Del Mar and caught this scene. I didn’t paint it on the spot. I did my usual took notes and digital photos and reinvented the design and composition later. Trees are great to paint they have spirit...

It’s wonderful it can be a grey day outside (not complaining) but I can paint a bright sunny day and invent my own colors. I’d been painting with ink the last few days. This high key painting was a nice change. This painting was done with acrylics and something new for me a RayMar "Plein Aire Panel."

Turned the news off and listening to some jazz and blues. Then turned to abstract ink painting with calligraphic strokes. It’s my organic way of expressing emotion.

Chinese Ink with its ability to flow with short, long, thick and slim strokes has calmness. Whether the artwork appears calming or "jazzy" it will be up to the viewer. I like it when a viewer makes their own personal interpretations. Hmm, music and painting are like auditory and visual poetry.

Art, Emotions, and Oil Spills

I’ve been following the reports on the oil spill off the Louisiana Coast and how the disaster is spreading. The concerns about families losing their means of support and images of seagulls, pelicans, fish, and wetlands covered in oil, dugs at your heart . . .

I kept wandering what was the wildlife experiencing while their environment was crumbling. Real life is much more graphic. Although I normally don’t do portraits of animals, I think this painting served as an aid in processing the impact of those sad images . . .

So, I’m sending all those people working on the oil disaster good vibes and I hope they stop the leak.

Creative Process and Small Format Art

Mostly for myself inspiration can be like a bowl of “Jell-O” that needs to firm up. I usually have to slow down and focus then the painting will start.

Why all the musing about creativity? Well, this 8" X 10" acrylic landscape took time to gel. After snapping photos of Highway 40 scenery through the window of my car those images became the inspiration for this landscape.

You’d surmise a small format painting would take less “thinking” time but that’s not how it works... Small or large format I have to invest myself. I guess that’s what it’s all about for any genre... An art teacher said something like most art is autobiographical perhaps he's correct...

Impressions of Nature

Pierre Bonnard said “The important thing is to remember what most impressed you and to put it on canvas as fast as possible. Art will never be able to exist without nature”

I was walking around Laguna Beach on Cliff Drive. I turned around and boom there is the ocean. I wish I could say I immediately painted the scene.

The inspiration came quickly but I took notes and some photos then when I’m home I try to recapture the feelings and “what impressed” me that day. Trying to express the intangible qualities of nature is mind-boggling but I’ll press on. It's fun!

Why is Original Art Special?

The idea of creating and sharing ones art with the world is not new. The artist, collector, decorator, and patron of art seem to understand intuitively the journey of the artwork is completed when the handmade art is transported to a new home . . .

Does it matter if the art is purchased because the collector “likes the colors, “design, emotions, or subject matter? I don’t know. I’m clear that original art has a spirit/life of its own and when shared becomes even more special for the creator and new owner.

Acrylic Painting, It's Cold in So. California

It’s cold in Southern California, and I can hardly believe it! I’m sure people in the east coast wouldn’t consider 32 degrees in the evening and 55 degrees in the afternoon a winter wonderland but for a native Californian its cool.

The inspiration for the artwork I posted was taken from my neighbor’s yard and the surrounding landscape. The little orange tree vibrates with color when its cold. When I try to capture nature, it’s a humbling task. I like it when a small bit of color in a landscape just captures your attention and then you fight to put it on canvas. I enjoy the learning process between nature and the artist.

ACEO, Miniature Acrylic Landscape Painting

What is ATC (Artist Trading Cards) and ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals)?

The simple explanation is they are miniature art works the size of baseball cards at 2 ½" X 3 ½.” The cards are made in a variety of subjects, substrates and art media but the size is uniform. Creating an ACEO has the same amount of effort, standards and commitment but for me, I think a little punch of fun and whimsey goes into the work. As an artist you know the collector/viewer is going to be much more intimate with their ATC or ACEO because of its size. You hold it in your hand versus stand three to ten feet away. You smile, giggle and connect with the artwork much more readily. Perhaps that’s the reason I’m fond of small format art.

Connecting, it’s all about bringing the work, artist, and viewer/collector together even if it’s only the size of a baseball card

Original Painting Acrylic Fall Landscape

Selection, brainstorming, searching for subject matter, composition, color and then finally a focus. I go through a whole series of mental exercises before painting.

The only analogy that comes to mind is a baseball pitcher on the mound, winding up then sending a fast ball through the air and hitting the catcher’s mitt. Then bingo I finally know what to paint! (It’s the baseball playoff’s, what can I say.) You don’t normally think of baseball when looking at abstract or impressionist painting but it works for me.

Imagination whether it’s coming from third base sliding into home or focusing on a red abstract tree it feels similar to me. It’s all part of the creative process. So never say “I’m not creative” just look around you and find something that will take you to that playful place....
